The Black Knight Pub, Yellowknife, Canada

While Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories, don’t be fooled – YZF is still a slice of the frontier.  While Yellowknife isn’t exactly metropolitan, it’s still charming, a damn good time, and – believe it or not – home to one of the best U.K.-style pubs we’ve ever been to.  The Black Knight has a great selection of excellent Canadian domestics on tap like Big Rock and Alexander Keith’s at its stained and brass-pole-wrapped bar, and an outstanding menu of traditional pub fare including meat pies, shepherd’s pie, cottage pie, along with equally excellent non-pie entrees (though the cottage pie is decadent).  Most nights feature live music – be it French-Canadian folk or traditional Irish singers like the affable Jim Taylor.  Best of all, the service is kind, and the patrons are garrulous.  This may be the closest you’ll feel to home while being 250 miles from the arctic circle.
